About the Role

The American Immigration Council is seeking a visionary Executive Director with a proven record of accomplishment in non-profit leadership. The Executive Director must have a demonstrated commitment to reforming inequities in the US immigration system, working to advance positive public attitudes about immigrants, and creating a more welcoming America. The role will require a clear understanding of issues impacting the immigrant community and will require an understanding of how to enact change at the national level. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for a 40-member staff, fundraising, programs, and overall implementation of our core mission.

The Executive Director will lead a highly motivated group of experienced professionals responsible for legal strategy, policy advocacy, strategic communications, finance, operations, and development. The director will manage the department leaders responsible for day-to-day implementation of programs and will serve as the foremost participant in raising an annual budget of $10 million.

Key Responsibilities

The Executive Director will provide compelling, strategic vision and leadership at a pivotal time for the Council and immigration policy as well as develop and pursue strategic priorities in coordination with the staff and board to ensure the organization remains part of a broad and diverse coalition of organizations working for change.

The role requires substantial skill in developing and building partnerships across compatible civic organizations that share the mission and vision of the Council, and the Executive Director must be a strong collaborator and partner to the leadership of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

The Executive Director will expand, evolve, and sustain the American Immigration Council's fundraising base, and ensure that the organization meets its annual revenue goals by providing leadership and support to key fundraising staff, and by working in close partnership with our board and current funders. The role will require a keen ability to strengthen and expand alliances with new and existing funders.

The Executive Director will exercise strong fiscal stewardship over the organization's finances, and uphold the organization's standards of excellence, transparency, and optimization of resources.

We are looking for someone who:

Is persistent in driving for results with the ability to create a clear and concise roadmap with short- and long-range goals. The Executive Director must set the vision, be able to motivate staff, and effectively lead them through implementation.

Demonstrates passion for the mission, values, and diversity of our organization.

Has considerable experience in policy, advocacy, organizing and/or delivering services that support and strengthen immigrant or other historically marginalized communities. This experience should be coupled with an openness to innovative ideas and a willingness to challenge assumptions and conventions.

Is a skilled fundraiser who connects strategy to priorities and programs to revenue.

Has strong management, business and financial skills and has a proven track record as a solid decision maker.

-Firsthand knowledge of the immigrant experience and the impact of immigration law and policy is a plus.

-Has successfully led a growing, diverse organization of comparable or larger size, budget, and scope.

-Prior experience with board governance.
