Global Controller, CBRE Investment Management

CBRE Investment Management, a part of CBRE Group, is a real estate-focused asset manager with over $129 billion in assets under management, serving primarily institutional clients across the Americas, EMEA, and APAC.

Job Description:

The global controller leads the investment management business's corporate accounting function. This individual has responsibility for accounting teams in several regions and reports to the controller of the CBRE Real Estate Investments segment. The successful candidate will be a technically proficient controller with financial services experience, excellent communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to improve and streamline processes.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide oversight of regional accounting teams and month-end, quarter-end and year-end close and reporting processes and deliverables
  • As needed, review in detail schedules and related commentary on key business line items, including: carried interest revenue, expense, and related accruals; fund co-investment balances and P&L; incentive compensation expense and accruals
  • Understand the disclosure implications of material transactions and work with the CBRE SEC reporting team to ensure the completeness and accuracy of investment management-related disclosures
  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for investment management leadership; in consultation with the CBRE technical accounting team, determine the appropriate accounting for non-routine matters and advise the business on the accounting implications of proposed transactions
  • Identify and implement accounting process improvements, with a bias toward standardization and efficiency
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors
  • Partner with the technology division on system implementation, upgrades, automation and customization

Leadership:
  • Set and effectively communicate department strategy and priorities, in alignment with the broader company and finance division strategy.
  • Model and cultivate a continuous-improvement mindset; challenge existing processes and encourage the adoption of technology-based solutions and enhancements.
  • Encourage collaboration and communication within and beyond the department; work effectively with leadership of other functional areas and with controllers of other CBRE business lines
  • Provide ongoing informal and formal feedback. Work with direct reports to set performance-related goals. Identify development needs and training opportunities; connect the team with appropriate internal resources.


Qualifications:

10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 7 years of management and supervisory experience and knowledge of U.S. public company internal control and reporting requirements. Financial services experience, particularly fund accounting or asset management accounting. Strong technical grasp of U.S. GAAP, including experience in the application of ASC 606, ASC 323, ASC 946, and ASC 825 (specifically, the fair value option). Demonstrated ability to implement process and/or system improvements and lead through periods of change. Track record of effectively managing both people and processes and contributing to the professional development of teams and direct reports.

Preferred qualifications:

Prior work experience at a global asset management firm

CPA w/ Big 4 public accounting experience

Experience overseeing outsourced business processes

Familiarity with PeopleSoft
