Arixa Capital Advisors is seeking a Managing Director in its Los Angeles headquarters to help drive the company’s growth as a highly-respected non-bank real estate lender. The successful candidate, who will join the company's existing two managing directors to round out the senior leadership team, will bring an unusual combination three distinct abilities:

  1. Manage and grow the commercial real estate lending portion of the business; understand and execute the job of a business unit leader with P&L responsibility;
  2. Be the chief origination officer for CRE loans; build and lead a team of talented originators;
  3. Help to manage the whole business (in addition to your business unit). Lean in to company-wide people management and leadership challenges and possess the drive and ambition to help scale a new type of business, without any blueprint or exact model from which to work.

In our view, the non-bank real estate lending industry is still in its infancy. Market leaders will be determined in the coming years and we aim to extend our excellent reputation for performance and service. Arixa wants to build our brand recognition with the best smaller residential developers who focus on 1-20+ unit residential and mixed use renovation and construction projects in the most dynamic West Coast markets including the Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego areas. Our approach is to focus on serving the needs of these borrowers who are not currently well-served by banks. Banks take too long to make decisions and are not flexible due to their slower-moving, very cautious culture which stems from the way banks are regulated today. We have found that by selecting the right borrowers, our business can grow as they grow into the next generation of leading developers.

Once we have aligned with a borrower, and confirmed that we share a common vision and approach, we will do everything we can to help ensure their success. This may include making valuable introductions for them, introducing them to JV equity or mezzanine capital sources, or even meeting a borrower at his or her child’s sports practice field to get key documents signed! We think this “white glove service” approach can differentiate Arixa as the non-bank lending niche becomes a substantial new industry in California and beyond.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be able to add significant value in three distinct areas:

  • Manage & grow the CRE bridge & construction lending business unit. We are seeking someone who can manage all aspects of this business--which is distinct from Arixa's established single family (1-4 units) renovation and construction lending business. The candidate must be comfortable acting as the general manager of this business, with a focus on driving and managing revenue and profit growth.
  • Be the chief origination officer for CRE bridge loans. Arixa focuses on residential real estate but can also lend on other CRE properties. Typical loans are under $10 million and may involve renovations or ground up construction. For sale housing, for rent apartments and mixed use properties all fall within Arixa's core mandate. Typical loans are for maturities of two years or less. You must be able to lead by example as an originator, select talented originators, and motivate them to perform to their potential.
  • Help manage the entire business. Arixa consists of an SFR renovation lending business; a CRE bridge lending business; a fund management business; and all the connective tissue that keeps these parts of the business together. The Managing Director must be able to move outside of his or her silo to assist in keeping the entire business running smoothly. This position requires drive and ambition. Arixa has thrived by bringing highly professional service delivery to the world of small balance, short maturity real estate lending. In order to build significant assets under management, Arixa must fund a relatively high volume of loans while also increasing its average loan size, without straying from its core expertise or market niche. Everything Arixa must do requires energy and creativity and the successful candidate will not shy away from the work involved in building the business.
