Our column prides itself on not becoming a bully pulpit, ranting political rhetoric or taking stands on the political scene—of course except for a jab or two at the pork barrel in Washington that Democrats and Republicans alike refill during every congressional session and in every piece of legislation. Yet last night I watched the victory speeches of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, who are about as far right and far left as we have ever observed in recent times. Bernie Sanders espoused socialist preaching that would break the bank, and Trump trumpeted an ultra-right promise that the wall across Mexico will be built and that gun-toting is good and will crush ISIS at the local level. Neither of these politicians espouse healthy agendas for our country and I am rather concerned that one of them may win, destroying what had made America great: a centrist government that balances the agendas of the left and right. In our most recent times, Reagan and Clinton (Bill, that is) ultimately played to the center. I hope that the upcoming primaries turn the tide and avoid a rather worrisome march to the Left or Right.
